Ugh, sometimes I feel like I’m still in my 20’s with a ton of energy and sass. Other times I feel like I am 2 steps away from falling in my grave and just want to sleep and decay in my bed for days.
Being in my later 40’s though, it’s surprises me how many people think I’m so much younger. I do look younger. I started a bit later in life taking care of myself around 35 years old, but, well, age is just a number, right?
And I’m sure you’ve probably heard the saying, “Age is just a number.” But did you know that there’s more than one way to measure how old you really are?
Check out how to find out how old you REALLY are, plus ways to keep you feeling as young in mind, body and soul for as long as you can including ways I’ve been able to look younger well into my later 40’s!
Numerical Age vs. Biological Age: The Key Differences
While your numerical age (also called chronological age) is simply the number of birthdays you’ve had, your biological age tells a different story.
Your biological age reflects how well your body is aging based on lifestyle choices, genetics, and overall health.
The good news? You have control over your biological age, meaning you can influence how youthful and healthy you look and feel at any stage of life!
Numerical Age
- The straightforward count of years since your birth.
- Determines life milestones (driving at 16, voting at 18, retirement at 65, etc.).
- Fixed and unchangeable.
Biological Age
- A reflection of how well your body functions compared to others of the same chronological age.
- Influenced by lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, sleep, and stress levels.
- Can be younger or older than your numerical age, depending on your health choices.
For example, a 40-year-old who exercises regularly, eats well, and manages stress might have the biological age of a 30-year-old.
Meanwhile, a 25-year-old who smokes, eats fast food, and doesn’t sleep well may have a biological age closer to 35!

How to Keep Your Biological Age Younger Than Your Numerical Age
The key to maintaining a youthful body and mind lies in daily habits. Whether you’re in your 20s or over 40, here are proven strategies to keep your biological age low and your appearance fresh and glowing.
In Your 20s? Here’s How to Stay Looking Young for Years
Your 20s are the foundation years for aging gracefully. The habits you form now will determine how youthful you look and feel in your 40s and beyond.
✅ Prioritize Skin Protection:
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+), even on cloudy days.
- Wear sunglasses to prevent fine lines around the eyes.
- Choose non-toxic, mineral-based sunscreens to avoid harmful chemicals.
✅ Eat a Skin-Nourishing Diet:
- Load up on antioxidant-rich foods like blueberries, spinach, and dark chocolate.
- Include omega-3 fatty acids (found in salmon, chia seeds, and walnuts) to keep skin hydrated.
- Stay hydrated with water and green tea to flush toxins and keep skin glowing.
✅ Adopt a Gentle Beauty Routine:
- Avoid harsh scrubs that can damage your skin barrier.
- Use retinol or bakuchiol (a plant-based alternative) to promote collagen production.
- Opt for clean beauty brands that are free of parabens, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances.
✅ Build a Strong Wellness Foundation:
- Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night to allow your body to repair itself.
- Reduce alcohol and caffeine intake, as they can dehydrate and age your skin.
- Exercise at least 3-5 times a week to improve circulation and keep your body strong.
In Your 30s? Stay Radiant and Maintain Youthful Energy
Your 30s are all about balance—career, family, and personal health. This is a crucial time to reinforce good habits and keep aging at bay.
✅ Enhance Your Skincare Routine:
- Introduce peptides and hyaluronic acid to maintain elasticity and hydration.
- Use vitamin C serums to prevent early signs of aging and boost collagen.
- Exfoliate gently with PHA or lactic acid to keep skin bright and smooth.
✅ Stay Active & Build Muscle:
- Strength training 2-3 times per week helps maintain muscle mass and a youthful metabolism.
- Include low-impact exercises like Pilates or yoga to enhance flexibility and reduce stress.
- Prioritize post-workout recovery with protein-rich meals and quality sleep.
✅ Optimize Your Diet for Longevity:
- Eat more fiber-rich foods (avocados, beans, oats) to support digestion and metabolism.
- Increase healthy fats like olive oil and nuts for glowing skin and brain health.
- Cut back on processed foods and refined sugars to reduce inflammation and premature aging.
✅ Support Your Mental & Emotional Well-Being:
- Manage stress with meditation, journaling, or therapy.
- Cultivate hobbies and social connections to stay mentally engaged.
- Set boundaries at work and in relationships to reduce chronic stress.
Over 40? Here’s How to Maintain a Youthful Appearance Naturally
As we age, our skin and bodies require extra care. But that doesn’t mean we have to resort to invasive procedures! Here’s how to age beautifully and maintain a youthful glow at 40 and beyond.
✅ Hydration & Collagen Support:
- Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily to keep skin plump and reduce fine lines.
- Include collagen-rich foods like bone broth, eggs, and citrus fruits to boost elasticity.
- Use a hyaluronic acid serum to lock in moisture and smooth wrinkles.
✅ Choose the Right Skincare Products:
- Switch to gentle, hydrating cleansers that don’t strip natural oils.
- Use niacinamide to improve skin tone and reduce age spots.
- Invest in a quality vitamin C serum to brighten skin and fight free radicals.
✅ Enhance Your Diet for Longevity:
- Eat colorful, anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric, leafy greens, and berries.
- Reduce sugar and processed food intake to prevent collagen breakdown.
- Include healthy fats (avocados, olive oil, nuts) for skin elasticity.
✅ Mind Your Hormones & Stress Levels:
- Manage stress with meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises.
- Consider talking to a doctor about hormonal balance and natural supplements.
- Prioritize sleep and relaxation, as poor sleep accelerates aging.
How to Measure Your Biological Age
Curious about where you stand? There are a few ways to measure your age or estimate your biological age:
- Physical and Functional Tests:
- Grip strength, balance, and walking speed assessments can indicate overall aging.
- Biomarker Testing:
- Blood tests measuring cholesterol, inflammation, and metabolism.
- Telomere length tests (telomeres are DNA caps that shorten with age and stress).
- AI-Powered Health Apps:
- Some advanced algorithms can estimate biological age based on lifestyle data and biomarkers.
